Actually it is closer to true MMA today. As we see fighters that are well-versed in multiple disciplines ("Mixed" Martial Artists). The UFC was originally a one-night tournament in which fighers of different martial-arts backgrounds fought each other. It was one style vs. another. And while there were less rules, the fighters were very limited due to their lack of knowledge (especially of Gracie-BJJ). Now, the sport has evolved to the point where fighters are mastering multiple forms for use in combat. IMO, it has made things much more exciting and dynamic. my friend who is very into martial arts said it was more like MMA before because the fighters who fought each other were different styles, the fact that today's fighters basically have the same skills does not make it true MMA. Either way I found pre Dana White UFc a million times more entertaining but thats a matter of opinion of course. It's all opinion (and I disagree a million times over). I've been followning since its inception and have friends that actively participate (not to mention my own experience). The fighters definitely do NOT have (basically) the same skills. They are more well-rounded, but each fighter has their strengths and weaknesses - stylistic differences. The sport has evolved and the fights are much more dynamic. As for Cro Cop, his time is over. He had a good run, but he can't hang with the heavyweights anymore. Belfort, on the other hand, looked better than ever.

That still doesn't address my point about the change from fighting until one person lost to having judges decide if the fight doesn't end within the allotted time.

I like the round system. If you don't finish your opponent within the 3-5 rounds (15-25 mins.) it goes to the judges. In the beginning, I believe there were 60 minute time limits on the fights; and not many reached that point.

Yeah, but why do you like the round system more?
I think the original way was better because it provided a decisive outcome. Letting it go to a decision means the result can often be subjective and people stand the chance of being robbed.
Plus, it's much more exciting to see a fight finish rather than have judges decide and then have people possibly debate the decision.

There's an intricate scoring system and the winner (if it goes to the judges) is usually pretty clear-cut. In recent memory, I can only think of a few fights where I thought the outcome should've gone the other way.
Not to mention, the welfare of the fighters has to be considered. As a fighting organization that wants to have sanctioning, promotions, and clearance by atheltic commissions, you have to have rules to protect the fighters.
You want to see brutal, ancient Rome-style fights? There are plenty of underground fight-clubs around.
Edit: So, to answer your question: I like the fact that it's more of an athletic competition, rather than a brutal shitshow.

I've been Agreeing with Bm a lot lately, what's going on?
But for the record I do believe for the most part the modern day fighters have more skills, I still find it more boring, again though that's just a matter of opinion, I'm at best a causal mma fan.

Damn that is wrong. But honestly I still think he is a great fighter but he did not fight like he normally does in that fight.

Agreed about Silva, he has some crazy reflexes. I would love to see him against Machida or GSP.

too bad he'll never fight machida because they're close friends (silva said it himself).
and it's unlikely that a silva/gsp match will ever happen as silva seems like he's going to move up to light heavyweight (which is stupid since he won't fight machida).

Silva would smash GSP in the ring. Plus, GSP doesn't have the guts to move up.
Onto the UFC, absolutely gutted on the rich fight. Ruined my saturday that did. Belfort and Silva looks a good fight and Belfort could actually pose a threat to Silva.
On another note, looks like the Rampage/Evans is off. Remember the show A-team? They're making the A-team movie and Rampage will play the Mr. T role. Baraduc something. Lost respect for Rampage but I understand the reasons for taking this role. He's also taking a paycut from playing in the movie. Sanchez and BJ Penn has now moved up to 107 and the 107 card looks STACKED.
Also, pretty much agree with Strider on everything he's said in this thread so far on the rounds system and how modern ufc is better these days.

LOL @ gsp not "having the guts" the move up. He would totally move up, he said it himself after ufc 100, except he would put on the weight the right way so as to stay healthy. Rapid weight gain/loss is bad for your body. I don't know that Silva would "smash" him, but he would have a size advantage no doubt that would make it difficult for GSP to win. You could say that Silva is more of a pussy for flat out refusing to fight machida. So what if they're friends? They should still "have the guts" to put their records on the line and see who's better. And yeah, Rampage A-team is old news. Fight won't happen for months after it was originally scheduled. If it happens at all, since apparently rampage is saying he's quitting fighting. (though I'm optimistic he'll come back eventually)
