Why/why not?

Legalize. At the very least decriminalize ( which we've done in Massachusetts ). It's harmless and even if it wasn't you should be able to put whatever you want into your own body.
I do not use it and would not start if it was made legal.

LEGALIZE ITStars makes two excellent points: #1 that it is harmless & #2 that people should be able to do whatever they want with their own bodies. I extend this line of thinking to both suicide and abortion as well- albeit with strings.. Additionally having it be illegal does far more harm than good. Every year millions of dollars are spent prosecuting and incarcerating innocent people for victimless crimes when instead that money could be being generated from what is clearly a huge cash crop. The medical argument is also legitimate but I think that it is used too often as an excuse. Weed should be fully legal for everyone regardless of their health. The NRA has a famous slogan which states: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." The same applies to drugs. Drugs are chemicals with no moral standing. They are tools which can be used to produce a desired effect. It is only how they are used[/i] that makes them right or wrong. People need to be responsible for their actions and stop blaming other things for the problems which they themselves created. Finally, by far the most important reason that pot should be legal is so I am never again forced to put up with my brother's bullshit to get a bag. It should be no more of an ordeal than going to the gas station. Everytime I have to put up with that insufferable little bastard's bad attitude and have to be nice anyway it makes me furious at the government for forcing me into that position.

LEGALIZE IT!!!!
There are sooooo many reasons! Stars and Kitty are right! You should be able to do whatever the hell you want with your own body, marijuana is far more favorable than alcohol (and other drugs for that matter) in terms of health effects, and our government is wasting A LOT of tax dollars prosecuting people for marijuana related crimes when instead they could be collecting a lot of extra tax dollars from legal sales. Why wouldn’t the government take advantage of additional revenue and spend it on something more important? (ugh, which is another topic I won’t get into right now)
It is a HUGE cash crop. Since medical marijuana became legal here in Colorado, it has become one of the fastest growing businesses in the state. Legalizing marijuana could be a great stimulus for our economy. It's not going to solve all of our economic problems, but it certainly wouldn’t make them any worse.
Actually in 2005 Denver voters chose to legalize the possession of marijuana for adults. Not to make it legal for medical use or decriminalize it, but just plain legalize it. It was the first major city to do so and there have been no negative results that I am aware of. It’s is a step in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go, especially if the federal government continues to avoid the issue.

Don't legalise it.
Marijuana, or the chemical that gets everyone on a high (tetrahydrocannabinol) is dangerous to those with undiagnosed mental illness (and that can range from depression all the way through to psychosis.) The chemical imbalance it creates is ridiculous and has long lasting damaging effects.
Also to say it doesn't harm your body is like saying smoking doesn't harm your body. Smoking cannabis does significantly more lung damage to you than tobacco smoking does.
As a hallucinogenic, it is highly addictive and adding that in to the mix of alcoholism is a lethal combination.
I also don't buy the argument to legalise for medicinal purposes. There are ways to extract the chemicals from it to use in medication form and a vast variety of other pain killers available.
I would however support decriminalising it for various reasons. People shouldnt have their international travelling eligibility tightened because of mistakes they've made at a young age. Also possession of it is a minor offence that doesn't warrant a criminal record. Howeer I'd expect robust regulation rules around usage that would ensure that usage isn't encouraged but does not incur a criminal penalty.
